What is Myvatn and where is it?
This is a shallow volcanic lake in the north of Iceland, near the Krafla volcano, about 50 km from the Arctic Ocean. The area is about 37 square meters. km, but shallow: the average depth is 2.5 meters, the maximum is 4.5 meters, so you have to try harder to drown.
Where did this lake come from?
It was formed by a large basalt eruption about 2,300 years ago: lava flowed from the south and blocked the ancient glacial lake. That's how nature arranged a reservoir for itself.
What is worth seeing here?
Dimmiborgir is a whole field of stone pillars left when the lava flowed out of the temporary lakes. Next to the pseudocrater near Skutusstadir, Hverfjadl crater and lava islands right in the middle of the lake.
What is Myvatn famous for among bird lovers?
15 species of ducks nest here - the most in all of Europe. Crested mullet and sea mullet are most common. Since 1977, the territory has the status of a Ramsar wetland.
When to go and what should you know in advance?
It is best in summer, when migratory ducks fly in and the weather is tolerable. Just a warning: the name itself comes from the Icelandic "mý" - midge, because in the summer of these insects there are clouds here. Don't take the repellent for ticks.
