What is Crater Lake and what is it famous for?
This is the deepest lake in the USA - about 594 meters deep. It sits in the caldera of the Mazama volcano, which collapsed in on itself about 7,700 years ago. The surrounding park was created in 1902.
Where did such a lake come from?
The Mazama volcano once stood here. After a powerful eruption, its peak sank inward - a huge depression-caldera was formed, which was gradually filled by rains and snow. No river flows into or out of the lake.
Why is the water so blue?
The lake is fed only by precipitation, without muddy tributaries, so the water here is extremely clear and has a deep blue color. That's why photographers love him.
What to see on the spot?
The main star is Wizard Island, a cone of a younger volcano sticking out of the water. The road along the edge of the caldera opens up a view of the lake from almost all sides.
When is the best time to go?
The lake lies at an altitude of about 1,883 meters, so it snows heavily in winter and some of the roads are closed. Summer and early autumn are the safest option if you don't want to get stuck in drifts.
