What is Denali and what makes it special?
This is the highest mountain in North America, about 6190 meters. It stands in Alaska and is part of the Seven Peaks Club - the same one for which climbers travel all continents.
Why does it have two names - Denali and McKinley?
The native Athabaskan word "Denali" means "great", and that is how the mountain has been called since time immemorial. In 1896, it was given the name of President McKinley, and in 2015, the historic name was officially returned.
Where exactly is it located?
In the center of Denali National Park in Alaska, USA. That is, there are no souvenir shops around the top, but a huge nature reserve.
How exactly do they know its height?
The height has been remeasured more than once: the figure has been corrected several times, and in 2015 the GPS survey showed 6190.49 meters. The mountain doesn't seem to like rounding either.
Who and when first climbed to the top?
The first confirmed ascent was on June 13, 1913, the group was led by Hudson Stack. And in 2014, the Catalan Kilian Jorne raced along the Rescue Gully route in 11 hours and 40 minutes - a speed record.
