Uxmal
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Ushmal and where to find it?
This is an ancient Mayan city on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, about 78 km from Mérida. About 25,000 people once lived here, and by the 16th century the city was empty.
What must be seen?
The main star is the 30-meter pyramid "The Wizard's House". Nearby is the Ruler's Palace with a mosaic frieze made of 20,000 individual tiles, as well as the Women's Monastery, the House of Pigeons and the House of Turtles.
Why does Ushmal look different from other Mayan ruins?
The city was built in the Puuk style - with large square areas and small carved ornaments on the facades. The eye immediately catches the details that are lacking in more brutal pyramids.
Is this place somehow officially recognized?
Yes, since 1996, Ushmal has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. That is, everyone agreed to protect it, not just local archaeologists.
How to get there?
The most convenient from Mérida is about 78 km, or from the town of Muna, which is only 15 km to the south. A hat and water are mandatory, Yucatan does not joke with the heat.
