FAQFrequently asked questions

What is Tikal and where to find it?

This is the largest of the ancient pre-Columbian Maya cities, hidden in the tropical forests of the El Peten department in Guatemala. The nearest cities of Flores and Santa Elena are about 30 km from here.

How old is this city?

Monumental buildings began to be erected here as early as the 4th century BC, and the peak occurred around 200-850 years. After 850, they stopped building, and somewhere in the 10th century, the city was simply abandoned.

How many people once lived here?

In the heyday, 100 to 200 thousand people lived on the territory of about 6.5 km2 - like an average modern city, only in the middle of the jungle.

What is worth seeing here?

The "Lost World" complex with a 32-meter pyramid is one of the oldest in the city, surrounded by 37 other structures. In general, the ruins will last for a long time.

What to expect from the area?

This is a lowland tropical forest with giant ceibas, monkeys, toucans and even jaguars. So the camera will be needed not only for stones.

Who dug it all up?

The first scientific expedition went here back in 1848, and the city was thoroughly excavated by scientists from the University of Pennsylvania in 1957-1970. A large-scale restoration was launched in 1979.
