FAQFrequently asked questions

What kind of place is this anyway?

An old Inca city in the Andes, built by the ruler Pachacutec around 1440. The name from the Quechua language means "old peak" - and it justifies itself: it sits at an altitude of about 2,400 meters.

How to get there?

The city is located 80 km northwest of Cusco, in the valley of the Urubamba River. That is, first you need to get to Cusco, and then move towards the valley.

Why was he found out so late?

The Spanish came around 1532, the city was abandoned, and it quietly waited in the mountains. The world remembered it only on July 24, 1911, when the American Hiram Bingham arrived here.

What is there to see?

Nearly two hundred buildings: the Sacred Square with the temple of three windows, the temple of the Sun, the royal palace and the Intihuatana stone - "the place where the sun is bound". The name was clearly not invented by boring people.

Is it a difficult walk?

Narrow streets and stairs often end up in a dead end or on a terrace over a precipice. So look below your feet, not just at the landscape.
