Galdhøpiggen
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Halgöpiggen and is it really the highest mountain in Norway?
Yes, this is the highest point in Norway and all of Northern Europe - 2469 meters. It stands in the Jotunheimen mountain massif, in the national park of the same name.
How to get to the top?
Two main routes. The simpler and more popular one is from the Juvasgütt hut, because from there you can walk along the glacier only with a guide. The second is from Spitterstulen, with three intermediate peaks and the crossing of the Svelnosbreen glacier past the blue ice waterfall.
When is the best time to go?
Hiking season - from June to August. On sunny days in late July and August, hundreds of people a day are on the trail. If you want skiing and not a crowd, then April-May is the best time for skiing.
What is interesting up there?
At the top there is a small hut where snacks and postcards are sold - the highest post office in Northern Europe once worked here. And near Juvasgütta there is a summer ski center with a lift up to 2,200 meters - the highest alpine resort in Scandinavia.
Any surprising facts?
The first documented ascent happened as early as 1850. And the mountain also holds a botanical record: it is here that the highest alpine flowers in the region grow - the glacial buttercup at 2,370 meters.
