Aiguille du Midi
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is the Aiguille du Midi and how high is it?
This is a sharp peak in the Mont Blanc massif in the French Alps with a height of 3842 meters. The name translates as Spire of the South, and it looks exactly as it sounds - a needle sticking into the sky.
How to get there?
From Chamonix, a cable car takes you up: it covers a height difference of more than 2,800 meters in about 20 minutes. The legs are intact, the ears are fixed.
What is remarkable about this cable car?
It was built in 1955, and for about two decades it was the highest cable car in the world. The record was selected, the landscape was not.
What can be seen from the top?
On a clear day, half of the Alps unfold before you: Mont Blanc itself (4809 m), the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, Grand Joras, Dom du Goute and even the Jura range in the distance.
When is the best time to go?
In summer, visibility is the best, so the chance to catch a clear panorama is higher. But at almost four thousand meters, the weather has its own character - take warm clothes even in July.
