Apollonia (Lycia)
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Apollonia and where to look for it?
These are the ruins of an ancient city in historical Lycia in the south-west of Turkey, near the village of Kilicli (aka Sicak) in the Kaş district of Antalya province. A city of Lycian origin, the first traces date back to about 500 BC.
What can be seen here?
Acropolis with double walls (an older palisade and a later Byzantine wall), two churches, a theater, baths with cisterns, a heroon sanctuary and six columnar tombs. Residential buildings huddled on the southwestern slope.
What was interesting about this city in ancient times?
Under the Romans, Apollonia did not live on its own, but was part of a local union-sympolitia together with Symena, Isinda and Aperlama - something like an ancient cooperative of cities. Later, in the 6th-7th century, the Byzantines ruled here.
Where did those pillar tombs come from?
This is a Lycian feature: six such tombs in the northern necropolis are the main evidence of the early, pre-Roman age of the city. They look like stone pillars with a burial on top.
