What is a multitool?

Multitool translated from English is a multi-tool. Those. a tool that combines different functions. In this regard, the "Swiss" penknife is a typical multitool. However, traditionally this name has been assigned to another type of multi-tool. Behind those that are built not on the basis of a folding knife, but on the basis of folding pliers. And even more precisely, on the basis of pliers.

Indeed, on their working surfaces there are recesses for more reliable holding of cylindrical parts (rod, pipe, etc.). It is worth noting that the classic pliers, familiar to every man, are a multifunctional tool, even without additional “bells and whistles” hidden in the handles. They combine the working elements necessary to perform the functions of a vice, pliers, side cutters and a knife for cutting wire. Four in one - quite a “multi”:)

But let's get back to multitools. The following tools can be hidden in the hollow handles of such pliers:

  • knife
  • scissors
  • straight or Phillips screwdriver
  • can opener and bottle opener
  • awl
  • file for wood
  • file
  • "square" for working with screwdriver bits (via adapter)
  • knife with a serrated blade (serrator)

As you can see, it really looks like a gentleman's "Swiss Army Knife" set. And just like multifunctional knives, multitools have become a popular gift for men. Last but not least, this was facilitated by its spectacular appearance and respectable price tag. Some Leatherman (one of the popular manufacturers) costs from 100 to 200 dollars. Agree, a very decent price for pliers. However, recently quite high-quality Chinese multitools have appeared, the price of which is an order of magnitude lower.
