Hiking Songs

Girl Guide/Girl Scout History Cadence
by Laurie Schultz
(to the tune of the Generic Army Marching Cadence)

There was a man named Baden-Powell
Started us out toward our goal.
He spread scouting far and wide
And his wife worked with Girl Guides.

Lady Olave was the first Chief Guide
She spread the news the world wide
Each Guide will her Promise say
And help people every day

World Centers we have four
In Africa we'll place one more.
In Our Cabana Girl Guides stay
Near the Grand Sierra Madre

If you go to England fair
Pax Lodge is located there
Traveling 'round the world wide
Every corner holds Girl Guides

In India you'll find a room
Sangam's located in Pune
In Switzerland there is a hike,
But Our Chalet you'll surely like

Camping, hiking, playing, too
Never resting 'til they're through
Want to see what its about,
Come on check Girl Guiding out.

FOLLOW ME BOYS
Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman
From the Walt Disney Film "Follow Me Boys"
Based upon the book: God and My Country By MacKinlay Kantor

Chorus:

Follow me, boys, Follow me!
When you think you're really beat,
That's the time to lift your feet,
And follow me, boys, follow me!
Pick them up, put them down,
And follow me.

Sergeant Reilley said, There's a fight to win!
Follow me, boys, follow me!
And it won't be done till we all pitch in.
Lift your chin with a grin and follow me!

Chorus

Shout: Pick them up, put them down, pick them up!

It's a long long time, but we've got the will.
Follow me, boys, follow me!
When we reach the top then it's all down hill.
Till you drop, don't stop, and follow me!

Chorus

Though the journey's end is beyond our sight.
Follow me, boys, follow me!
If we do our best then we've done all right.
Pack you load, hit the road, and follow me!
Chorus

Shout: Pick them up, put them down, pick them up!
We were all packed in when the sergeant said,
Follow me, boys, follow me!

We got off our backs and prepared our attack, When our sergeant hollered, Follow me!

Chorus

There's a job to do, there's a fight to win,
Follow me, boys, follow me!
And it won't be done till we all pitch in.
Lift your chin with a grin, and follow me!

Chorus

The Happy Wanderer

Chorus:
Val-der-ri, val-der-ra
Val-der-ri, val-der-ra ra ra ra ra ra
Val-der-ri, val-der-ra
(sing the last line of the verse)

I love to go a-wandering
Along the mountain track
And as I go, I love to sing
My knapsack on my back

I love to wander by the stream
That dances in the sun
So joyously it calls to me
Come join my happy song

I wave my hat to all I meet
And they wave back at me
And blackbirds call so loud and clear
From every greenwood tree

Oh, may I go a-wandering
Until the day I die
And may I always laugh and sing
Beneath God's clear blue sky

Thanks go to Debbie Hollis of Troop 571

IN THE GIRL SCOUTS

In the Girls Scouts, In the Girl Scouts,
We Can Camp, We Can Camp
All the tents are heated,
All the tents are heated
Ha ha ha! Ha ha ha!!!

In the Girl Scouts, In the Girl Scouts
We can hike, We can hike
All the trails are down hill, All the trails are down hill
Ha ha ha! Ha ha ha!

In the Girl Scouts, In the Girl Scouts
We can cook, We can cook
The leaders do the dishes, The leaders do the dishes
Ha ha ha! Ha ha ha

In the Girl Scouts, In the Girl Scouts
We love nature, We love nature
Especially snakes and bugs, Especially snakes and bugs
Ha ha ha! Ha ha ha!

In the Girl Scouts, In the Girl Scouts
We can swim, We can swim
And we love the pond scum,
And we love the pond scum
Ha ha ha! Ha ha ha!

In the Girl Scouts, In the Girl Scouts
We party all night,
We party all night
The leaders let us do it, the leaders let us do it
Ha ha ha! Ha ha ha!

This song needs a leader(S). The rest of the group echos the line after the leader sings it. Then after the verse is sung the whole group repeats the verse without the echo.

THE OTHER DAY

The other day (echo), I met a bear, (echo)
A great big bear, (echo) Oh, way out there (echo).

(Together)The other day I met a bear,
a great big bear, oh, way out there.

He looked at me,(echo) I looked at him, (echo)
He sized up me, (echo) I sized up him. (echo)

(Together) He looked at me, I looked at him.
He sized up me, I sized up him.

So he says to me,(echo) Why don't you run,(echo)
'Cause I see you ain't, (echo) Got any gun. (echo)
(Repeat without the echo.)

So I says to him, (echo) That's a good idea, (echo)
So come on feet, (echo) Let's up and flee. (echo)
(Repeat without echo.)

And so I ran, Away from there,
But right behind, Me came that bear. (repeat)

Up ahead of me, I saw a tree,
A great big tree, Oh glory be!(repeat)

The lowest branch, Was ten feet up,
So I'd have to jump, And trust my luck.  (repeat)

And so I jumped, In to the air,
But I missed that branch, Oh way up there. (repeat)

Now don't you fret, And don't you frown,
'Cause I caught that branch, On the way back down! (repeat)

That's all there is, There ain't no more,
Unless I meet, That bear once more. (repeat)

WONDEROUS LAND

When I first came to this wonderous land
I was not a wealthy man,
So I got myself a shack,
And I called it Break'n My Back.
So I called my shack Break'n My Back,
And the land was sweet and good,
And I did what I could.

When I first came to the wonderous land,
I was not a wealthy man,
So I got myself a cow,
And I called her No Milk Now
So I called my shack Break'n my Back,
And the land was sweet and good
And I did what I could.

3. Got myself a duck and I called her Out of Luck

4. Got myself a pig and I called her Doing a Jig

5. Got myself a horse and I called her Dobin, of course.

6. Got myself a wife and I called her Love of My Life

7. Got myself a son and I called him My Work's Done

The next two cadences are songs we made up during or last camping trip. Our girls had a mouse in their cabin and the other troop lead us on a great hike through a muddy riverbed that had us sinking in the mud as if it were quicksand. So we wrote a cadence for each troop.

Troop 151

We're the screaming Slatonites,
We're so tough we will fight,
'Cept when we see a mouse,
We go running from the house.

"Chorus?"
  Sound off, 1, 2,
Sound off, 3, 4,
Bring it on down, 1, 2, 3, 4,
1,2, __ __ 3, 4!

Screaming like banshees in the night,
We can't sleep without the light,
Begged our leaders if we could snooze.
In their bunks two by two's!
Chorus

  We're the screaming 151's,
We don't sleep when day is done.
We are such scaredy cats,
We can even scare a rat!
Chorus

Troop 316

Where's the mud hens of 316
We think mud is mighty keen,
Jump down turn around, hose us down,
The other leader's watch will never be found.

Chorus:
Sound off, 1, 2,
Sound off, 3, 4,
Bring it on down, 1, 2, 3, 4,
1,2, __ __ 3, 4!

With fearless Melissa in the lead.
We got deeper in the swamp reeds.
More than one of us sank to our knees
In the bottom mud of the Big Sandie!
Chorus

More than one shoe and sock were lost,
We got out for a very cheap cost.
Now we wonder if they'd hit the booze.
Before leading us on a 3 hour cruise!
Chorus

We're a flock of dirty, mud hens
Coming up slowly so we won't get the bends
Jump down, turn around, hose us clean.
Sorry, Mom, about the washing machine
Chorus
